Our Ladies Guild held its monthly meeting Jan. 11, 2016. Seven women were in attendance. Rhoda Grebe opened with a prayer.
Old business discussed:
Advent by Candlelight was attended by 18 women, 8 of whom were guests. We hope to continue the tradition next year. Thanks were given to Christal Cashmore for providing the program music.
The food baskets for Christmas were given to three families of migrant workers whose children attend Myakka City Elementary school. The members of Risen Savior were very generous with food and monetary donations. Karen Travis and Christal Cashmore delivered the baskets along with gifts of new clothing and toys for the children. Pat Brothers coordinated this project and thanks all who contributed.
We would like to continue to support the poorest families of Myakka City Elementary by conducting a clothing drive. We will be collecting gently used clothes and shoes for all ages during the month of February. Then on March 19, we will invite targeted families from the school to “shop” for free here at the church. We are calling the event the “Love Thy Neighbor” clothing drive. Families will be invited to “Come and Clothe Themselves in Love” (Col. 3:14)
We decided to give money from our treasury to support the printing of an informational brochure that we can hand out to visitors.
Volunteer lists need to be updated for greeters, altar care, cleaning, and Sunday morning snacks. A sheet will be passed out among members asking if they are willing to be added on to the current list.
Karen Travis has volunteered to purchase cut flower bouquets for the altar, instead of using the Lakewood Ranch florist. The flower chart will still be provided if anyone wants to help support this endeavor and then take the flowers home.
Ideas for future events:
We discussed asking Thrivent to help with future projects. Pat Brothers stated that at least 6 weeks ahead of a planned event, requests can be submitted for monetary support. We may also ask a Thrivent representative to speak to our group in the future on a topic to be determined.
Betty Giles will explore having speakers come to address breast cancer and human trafficking.
A fall fair like ones held in the past could be organized with a movie shown. Christal Cashmore and Susan Bare will investigate licensing to show a movie to the public.
The February meeting will be held on Feb. 8 at 6:30 here at church.
Rhoda closed with a prayer of thanks and scripture.
